Safety Guidelines for Using Your Tub Heater Coil

Ensuring safety is crucial when planning and using your heater coil. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Maintain Water Levels: The warm water return tube from the coil must always be submerged below the water level in your hot tub. If the water level drops, such as when individuals exit the tub, the water within the coil can overheat, creating a risk of injury from scalding water or steam.
  2. Secure Coil Attachments: Carefully plan how you will attach your coil to the hot tub. Ensure there is sufficient clearance above the warm water return line to keep it submerged even after people exit the tub. If the water line falls below this return, it can lead to dangerous situations.
  3. Keep the Coil Filled: The coil must always be filled to the brim with water, even when water is displaced as people leave the tub.
  4. Ensure Free Water Circulation: Water in the coil should circulate freely with the hot tub at all times. Avoid obstructing water flow to and from the coil with valves or similar devices.
  5. Mind Fire Safety: Be cautious, as fire and alcohol do not mix well. Always supervise the coil while it is in use or cooling down, especially around children or pets.
  6. Plan Placement Wisely: Position your coil carefully, ensuring the area around it is clear of obstructions and flammable materials. Make certain that the coil is stable and not at risk of tipping over.
  7. Fire Safety Measures: Take all necessary precautions to minimize fire hazards.
  8. Conduct a Safety Check: Before using your hot tub heater coil for the first time, perform a thorough safety inspection of both the setup and the surrounding area.
  9. Monitor for Issues: When using the coil for the first time, if you notice inadequate water flow, hot water spurting out, or knocking sounds, immediately extinguish the fire. These signs may indicate that the thermosyphon effect is not functioning correctly. Allow the system to cool, check for air bubbles or blockages, and retry.
  10. Maintain Proper Water Levels: Ensure that the cold water inlet and hot water outlet feeds are always below the hot tub’s water level. If the water line falls below the warm water outlet, circulation will cease, causing the water to overheat. This condition, known as dry firing, is extremely hazardous and can lead to scalding water or steam. Plan your setup to prevent this from occurring.
  11. Use a Thermometer: Unlike electric heaters, wood-fired options lack built-in thermometers. It is advisable to purchase a pool or hot tub thermometer to monitor the water temperature, allowing you to adjust the fire or add cold water as needed. These thermometers are readily available online.
  12. Temperature Variation: In the absence of a circulating water pump, be aware that temperatures may vary significantly in different areas of the tub, especially in larger or deeper models. The water near the warm water outlet from the coil will typically be the hottest.
  13. Condensation Awareness: Burning wood, even seasoned, will release moisture. If you observe water running down the side of your coil, it is likely condensation rather than a leak.

By following these safety guidelines, you can enjoy your hot tub while minimizing risks associated with using a heater coil.
