Maximizing the Efficiency of Your Heater Coil
To get the most out of your heater coil, consider the following tips:
1. Optimize Hose Lengths
Keep your hose lengths as short as possible. Use only the amount of hose necessary to establish a straight connection to your coil, and avoid letting the hose sag.
2. Prevent Leaks
Minimize the risk of leaks by using the hose clips provided to secure your hose to the coil and to the tub fittings (if purchased). Additionally, apply plumber’s PTFE tape to all threaded connections to ensure a watertight seal.
3. Eliminate Air Bubbles
To prevent air bubbles from forming in your coil or hose, minimize leaks (as mentioned above). It’s also beneficial to maintain a slight upward incline in the hose from the top of the coil back to the hot tub, as this allows air bubbles to rise back into the tub more easily.
If you suspect there is an air bubble in your hose or coil, gently tapping or shaking it can help dislodge the bubble.
4. Position Inlets and Outlets Correctly
Ensure your cold water inlet is positioned as low as possible in the tub, while the hot water outlet should be as high as possible, remaining about 5cm below the water line at all times. A low cold water feed combined with a higher hot water return is crucial for efficient circulation.
5. Avoid Dry Firing the Coil
DO NOT DRY FIRE THE COIL! Never ignite a fire in a coil that is not properly attached to a water-filled hot tub, or allow a fire to continue burning if the warm water outlet has dropped below the water line. This scenario can cause the coil and its attachments to heat up rapidly, leading to boiling water, steam, and excessive pressure within the coil. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
Additional Tips for Faster Heating
Use a Cover: Invest in a good cover for your hot tub and use it while heating the water to retain heat.
Insulate Your Tub: If possible, insulate your hot tub to improve heat retention.
Ensure Good Airflow: Maintain proper airflow beneath your coil. We offer stands for this purpose, or you can construct your own.
Burn Seasoned Wood: Use properly seasoned, dry wood or similar materials, as they burn hotter and produce less smoke.
Consider Fireguards: Coils equipped with fireguards help contain heat and enhance heating efficiency. We sell coils with fireguards, but you can also create your own version in various ways.
Use a Pump for Large Volumes: If you want to accelerate the heating process or are heating a large volume of water, consider using a pump. Remember to keep the pump running while there is heat in the fire to prevent steam and pressure buildup.
