Thermosiphon, also names the phenomenon caused by temperature-difference.The principle of temperature-difference driven liquid flow is based on the thermal expansion characteristics of liquids. When liquid is heated, its temperature increases, causing enhanced molecular motion and a reduction in intermolecular forces, which results in the expansion of the liquid’s volume. Conversely, when a liquid is cooled, its temperature decreases, leading to reduced molecular motion and increased intermolecular forces, resulting in the contraction of the liquid’s volume. According to the principle of thermal expansion, this volume change due to temperature differences can be utilized to achieve liquid flow.
A common method of temperature-difference driven liquid flow is to use the density difference created by the temperature difference to drive the flow. When there is a density difference in the liquid at different temperatures, the warmer liquid has a lower density, while the cooler liquid has a higher density. Because liquids are fluid, this density difference causes the warmer liquid to flow downward, creating natural convection.
Another common method of temperature-difference driven liquid flow involves changes in surface tension due to temperature differences. The surface tension of a liquid varies with temperature; as the liquid moves from a cooler area to a warmer area, its surface tension decreases, allowing the liquid to flow toward the warmer region. This process is known as “Marangoni convection,” which refers to the flow caused by the surface tension difference of the liquid at different temperatures.
The working of our wood fired tub heater coil is based on the above principle, the ancient but effective natural working mode. To connect your coil to a barrel or stock tank tub, you will need a compatible barrel drum fitting.
